Mike d’Abo – Build Me Up Buttercup

Creative and Dreams Music Network, LLC. and CEO Fred Cannon Welcome
Mike d’Abo.Mike d’Abo first came to prominence in 1966, replacing Paul Jones as the lead singer in  the UK’s top R&B band, Manfred Mann.  After Mike joined the band seven more Top 10 hits followed: “Just Like A Woman,” “Semi Detached Suburban Mr. James,” “Ha Ha! Said The Clown,” “Fox On The Run,” “My Name Is Jack,” “Ragamuffin Man,” and “The Mighty Quinn,” which reached #10 in the US charts in 1968, and became the band’s 3rd #1 in the UK (after “Doo Wah Diddy,” and “Pretty Flamingo”).

Mike went on to achieve even greater success as a songwriter, composing “Handbags & Gladrags,” which became a hit for UK soul singer Chris Farlowe in 1967. In 1968, Rod Stewart recorded, “An Old Raincoat Never Lets You Down.” Rod Stewart still features the song regularly in his concert repertoire. He re-recorded it for his #1 US album, Unplugged in 1991.  Then in 2000, The Stereophonics took the song to # 4 in the UK charts, and Ricky Gervais chose it as the theme song for his smash hit BBC comedy series, The Office.

Mike also wrote, “Build Me Up Buttercup”’ for The Foundations (with Tony Macauley) which reached #2 in the US charts in 1969, winning him an Ivor Novello award as “Dance Track Of The Year” in the UK.  It has since notched up over 6 million plays on American radio, and is still used for TV advertising purposes throughout the world, as well as being sung at many American sporting events.

During the 1970’s Mike composed several award winning TV jingles in the UK, (including Cadbury’s Finger Fudge), and he wrote the film music for There’s A Girl In My Soup’, starring Peter Sellers & Goldie Hawn.  Reverting to his role as a singer, Mike was chosen by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber to sing “King Herod’s Song,” on the original 1970 MCA cast recording of Jesus Christ Superstar.

In 1976, he joined forces with singer/songwriter Mike Smith, (formerly of the Dave Clark Five) to record their classic album, Smith & d’Abo for CBS records. In 1977, Mike emigrated to Taos, New Mexico, where he wrote country songs with Michael Martin Murphey,  “Love Affairs” (featuring Jennifer Warnes) reaching the US top ten Country charts in 1978.  In the same year, Anita Meyer took Mike’s song, “They Don’t Play Our Love Song Anymore” to the top of the Dutch charts. Other artists who have recorded Mike’s songs include: Engelbert Humperdinck, Bobby Vee, Cliff Richard, Jimmy Witherspoon, Cilla Black, Vicky Carr, and Bobby Goldsboro.

In 2023, Mike re-recorded “Build Me Up Buttercup” in a highly appealing ballad style – bringing a whole new emotional depth to this universally loved song.  Legendary Nashville music mogul, Sir Freddy Cannon, heard it, loved it, and is now proud to announce the release of MIKE d’ABO’s striking new version of “Build Me Up Buttercup” on Creative and Dreams Music Network, LLC. Billy Burnette- When The World Comes Back Around

Billy Burnette-When The World Comes Back Around
Creative and Dreams Music Network, LLC. and CEO Fred Cannon are proud to present Billy Burnette and Mick Fleetwood in partnership with Rock & Roll With It Records.
